Tips for Watering Your Plants

Tips From Our Garden Center

When it comes to watering your plants, there are no hard or fast rules. It is mostly a judgement call that depends on various aspects such as the type of plant, the soil, the weather, time of year, and more. Below are some helpful tips for watering your plants.

Water Plants at the Root

The roots need access to the water, not the leaves. Be sure that when you are watering your plants, you are giving sufficient water to the roots. Direct water at the base of your plants and avoid wetting any foliage as it invites fungus.

Water Only as Needed

Too much or too little water can be damaging to plants. Using an auto watering timer can be useful; just make sure to watch the weather, and reduce frequency when rainfall is abundant. Newly planted trees and shrubs should receive direct watering every 7-10 days.

Water Thoroughly

Water deeply and at fewer intervals so that you reach roots of the plant which needs the nutrients, sugars, and hormones contained in water. Lawns and annuals concentrate their roots in the top 6" of soil while perennials, shrubs, and trees are in the top 12". You will want to be sure you are watering enough to reach down 6-12". One to two watering sessions per week is usually sufficient. It is better to water less often but with plenty of water rather than a little water more often.

Water Early or Late

It is best to water your plants early in the morning when the sunlight is at its weakest, the ground is coolest, and foliage will have hours to dry before nightfall. When you water cooled soil in the evening or at night, less water evaporates than it would on hot soil during the day. It also allows any moisture on the leaves to dry out. It's much more difficult for plant diseases to get a foothold when the foliage is dry.
